Tooth Extractions for Orthodontic Treatment

Tooth Extractions at Jurong

Orthodontic treatments, such as braces and clear aligners (e.g. Invisalign or OneSmile) are indicated to align and straighten teeth, improving both functionality and aesthetics. In some cases, tooth extractions are necessary to achieve the best results.

Why Are Tooth Extractions Required for Orthodontic Treatment?

  1. Create Space: Removing one or more teeth can provide the necessary space to align crowded or misaligned teeth.

  2. Correct Bite Issues: Extractions can help in adjusting the bite, ensuring that the upper and lower teeth fit together properly.

  3. Severe protrusion: In some cases, teeth extractions are needed to resolve the severe protrusion of the upper and/or lower front teeth and thus, resulting in a much better facial profile

  4. Impacted teeth: When some teeth are impacted and/or buried inside your gums, it is sometimes necessary to remove them prior to commencing your orthodontic treatment. Otherwise, they may hinder the movements of the adjacent teeth.

Alternatives to Teeth Extractions for Orthodontic Treatment

While extractions can sometimes be beneficial, there are alternatives that might be considered based on individual cases:

  1. Expansion Appliances: These devices can widen the jaw to create more space without removing teeth.

  2. Interproximal Reduction (IPR): This technique involves reshaping the sides of the teeth to reduce their width, creating more space for alignment.

  3. Selective Tooth Movement: In some cases, strategic movement of certain teeth can achieve the desired results without the need for extractions.

How Much Do Tooth Extractions Cost in Singapore?

The cost of tooth extractions can vary depending on the complexity of the extraction. On average:

  • Simple Extractions: $90 to $150 per tooth.

  • Surgical Extractions: Up to $650 per tooth (Fully medisave claimable)

FAQs

  • At Sincere Dental, we try our best to avoid extractions if possible. However, this is assessed on a case-to-case basis and will be discussed in depth at our consultation.

  • Conventionally, teeth are extracted before you commence braces treatment. However, at Sincere Dental, teeth extractions are attempted only 1-2 months after you start braces treatment. This allows the soon-to-be extracted teeth to be loosen, so that the actual extraction process will be much more comfortable and pleasant.

  • Local anaesthesia (LA) will be given, hence, there should not be any sharp pain experienced during the extraction. However, when the LA wears off about 2 hours later, some discomfort is expected, which can be easily managed with painkillers.

  • The common typical candidate for orthodontic extractions is the premolars.
