Understanding Wisdom Tooth Removal

At Sincere Dental, we prioritise the well-being and oral health of our patients. One common dental concern we encounter is the issue of wisdom teeth. In this comprehensive guide, we'll delve into what wisdom teeth are, the benefits of their removal, the distinction between extractions and surgery, our process for wisdom tooth removal, what to expect and care instructions post-procedure

What Are Impacted Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, typically emerge in the late teens or early 20s. However, due to limited space in the mouth, they often become impacted, meaning they fail to fully erupt through the gums. Impacted wisdom teeth can lead to various issues such as pain, infection, damage to adjacent teeth and misalignment.

What Are The Benefits Of Removing Your Wisdom Tooth?

Removing impacted wisdom teeth can prevent potential dental problems down the road. Some benefits include:

  • Better oral hygiene

When wisdom teeth are impacted, cleaning them at the far back of your mouth can be very challenging, thus increasing your risk of having decay and gum problems

  • Reduced risk of infection

Impacted wisdom teeth can create pockets where food traps and bacteria thrive, leading to infections and gum disease

  • Preventing damage to adjacent tooth

Impacted wisdom teeth may push against neighbouring teeth, causing injury to adjacent teeth and surrounding bone

  • Prevention of crowding:

Wisdom teeth may exert pressure on adjacent teeth, causing overcrowding and misalignment, especially after you complete your orthodontic treatment

  • Alleviation of pain

Impacted wisdom teeth often cause discomfort, pain, and swelling in the jaw

The Difference Between Wisdom Tooth Extraction or Wisdom Tooth Surgery?

Extractions: This is a straightforward procedure typically performed when the wisdom tooth has fully erupted. It involves loosening the tooth from its socket and removing it.

Surgery: Surgical removal becomes necessary when the wisdom teeth are impacted or have not fully erupted yet. It involves making a small incision in the gum and some bone removal to access the tooth, followed by its removal.

The choice between extraction and surgery depends on the positioning and condition of the wisdom teeth. Our dentist at Sincere Dental will assess your case and recommend the most appropriate approach.

What To Expect After Wisdom Tooth Removal?

  • Swelling and Discomfort

Some swelling and discomfort are common for a few days (up to a week) but they are usually well managed with prescribed medication and cold compresses

  • Bleeding

Minor bleeding is normal and should subside within 1-2 days

  • Dietary Restrictions

Begin a soft diet if required and avoid hard, crunchy or spicy foods that could irritate the affected area

  • Healing Time

A typical recovery time takes a few days to a week, although some patients may experience longer or shorter recovery times. Nonetheless, most pain and swelling should improve within 2-4 days of the procedure. You are advised to follow your dentist's post-operative care instructions diligently to ensure a smooth recovery.
