A Brighter Smile: Unveiling the Wonders of Teeth Whitening at Sincere Dental

Introduction

A dazzling, radiant smile can leave a lasting impression, and one of the key elements to achieving that is having pearly white teeth. Teeth whitening has become a popular cosmetic dental procedure, sought after by individuals looking to enhance the brightness of their smiles. Here, we will explore the concept of teeth whitening, understand the science behind it, and delve into the specific whitening treatment options offered at Sincere Dental.

What Is Teeth Whitening?

Teeth whitening, also known as teeth bleaching, is a cosmetic dental procedure designed to lighten the colour of the teeth and remove stains and discoloration. Over time, various factors such as ageing, consumption of certain foods and beverages, smoking and poor oral hygiene can contribute to the yellowing or staining of teeth. Teeth whitening procedures aim to reverse these effects, restoring a brighter, more youthful appearance to the smile.

How Does Teeth Whitening Work?

Teeth whitening utilises bleaching agents such as carbamide peroxide to break down stains and discoloration on the tooth enamel. These agents contain oxygen molecules that penetrate the porous enamel and break down the bonds that hold the stains together, hence, removing them and effectively lightening the colour of the teeth.

What Are The Whitening Treatment Options at Sincere Dental?

Sincere Dental offers two main teeth whitening treatment options: chairside whitening and take-home whitening kits.

Take-Home Whitening Kits:

  • This option provides you the flexibility of whitening your teeth at home. These kits include custom-fitted trays and professional-grade whitening gel tubes. Patients can follow the instructions provided by their dentist, wearing the trays for a specified amount of time each day until the desired level of whitening is achieved. This option is ideal for individuals who prefer a more gradual and less sensitive approach to teeth whitening. It is also more affordable than the chairside whitening.

Chairside Whitening:

  • Chairside whitening, or in-office whitening, is a fast and effective option for those seeking immediate results. During the appointment, a highly concentrated whitening gel is applied to the teeth, and a curing light is used to accelerate and enhance the bleaching process. The entire procedure typically takes 1 hour, making it a convenient choice for individuals with a busy schedule.

What To Expect At Your Teeth Whitening Visit?

Before you commence any whitening procedures, your dentist will conduct a detailed oral examination to assess your suitability for treatment. While teeth whitening is suitable for most people, it is not recommended for individuals who are pregnant/breastfeeding, have highly sensitive teeth, gum disease, severely receding gums, decayed/cracked/worn teeth. It is important to address these fundamental issues prior to commencing your whitening treatment.

Take-Home Whitening Kits:

  • At your initial consultation, your dentist will take a 3D digital model of your teeth to fabricate the custom-fitted trays. They typically take 7-10 days to arrive. On the subsequent appointment, you will collect the trays, along with the whitening gel tubes. Your dentist will also discuss the instructions of use, oral hygiene practice and the things to take note of (eg diet restrictions).

Chairside Whitening:

  • Basic scaling and polishing will be first performed to remove any plaque/calculus/tartar for better penetration of the whitening gel. A mouth retractor will also be provided to protect your lips and tongue. Subsequently, a protective gel will be placed to protect your gums, followed by the application of the highly concentrated whitening gel. A curing light will be used to accelerate and enhance the whitening process. Desensitising gel will be provided to apply if necessary. The entire process typically takes about 1 hour.

Whitening FAQs

  • This can vary amongst individuals, depending on diet, lifestyle habits (eg smoking) and oral hygiene. But a good estimate would be 12-18 months.

  • The risk of having some sensitivity after whitening is common but it is usually manageable and should not affect your daily functioning. There are, however, some measures that can be undertaken to reduce this risk such as using sensitive toothpastes or desensitising tooth mousse at least 1 week prior and after your whitening treatment.

  • It is ideal to avoid consuming heavily coloured food and beverages (eg red wine, turmeric, coffee) and smoking. Good oral hygiene practices (eg brushing and daily flossing) are also encouraged.

  • No, there will not be any long term damage to the teeth and gums. Protective measures (eg mouth retractors, gum protective gel) and precautions will be undertaken to prevent the whitening gel from contacting your lips/gums. Nonetheless, should that occur, your gums may turn white for up to a day before reverting back to normal again with no long term effects.

  • It is generally safe to whiten your teeth as often as you like.
