Dental Braces Treatment in Singapore

What Are Braces?

Braces are orthodontic devices designed to correct dental malocclusion or misalignment. They work by applying consistent pressure to gently shift your teeth into the ideal position. There are several types of braces available in Singapore, and the right option depends on your specific dental needs and lifestyle preferences.

How Braces Solve Teeth Malocclusion Problems

Malocclusion, or misalignment of the teeth, comes in various forms as follows:

Braces help address malocclusion by slowly repositioning your teeth to restore both functionality and aesthetics. With the right type of braces, you can address various orthodontic problems such as overbite, underbite, crowding, and gaps between teeth.

Types of Dental Braces

These are the common types of braces provided by dentists in Jurong or anywhere in Singapore:

  • These are conventional braces, which consist of stainless steel brackets bonded onto each tooth and connected by an archwire that gradually guide them into the desired position. Small elastic bands, known as modules/ligatures, are used to secure the wire to the brackets.

Today, metal braces still remain a popular orthodontic choice, especially among teenagers, as they can be reliable and cost-efficient.

  • Unlike traditional braces, self-ligating braces employ a built-in sliding mechanism that holds the arch wire in place without the need for modules/ligatures. This design reduces friction, allowing for smoother and potentially faster tooth movement. The absence of ligatures also allows better oral hygiene, as there are fewer components to clean around.

  • Ceramic braces are a discreet orthodontic option designed for individuals seeking a less noticeable alternative to traditional metal braces. While the brackets are still visible, these braces composed of tooth-coloured ceramic brackets are less conspicuous than their metal counterparts.

Ceramic braces function similarly to traditional braces but while they offer improved aesthetics, they may also be more prone to staining and breaking due to the brittleness of ceramics.

  • Clear aligners are custom-made transparent trays, typically crafted from a smooth, BPA-free plastic material. They gradually move your teeth into the desired position by applying controlled and gentle forces.

This type of dental brace involves a series of progressively adjusted aligners, each worn for about 10 days before changing to the next set. Designed to be removable, this allows easy brushing and flossing and the ability to eat without restrictions. It is also a more discreet and comfortable orthodontic option compared to braces.

Benefits of Dental Braces Treatment

Braces offer more than just a straighter smile, this orthodontic solution can also help to:

Prevents Gum Disease

One of the benefits of braces is that they can help reduce the risk of gum disease. Gum disease, often caused by inflammation due to bacterial plaque buildup, is linked to poor oral hygiene. And misaligned teeth are more prone to trapping food particles and plaque, which can lead to gum issues over time.

By straightening your teeth, braces allow you to brush and clean your teeth better, helping you manage bacterial plaque buildup and maintain your oral health.

Prevents Tooth Decay

Braces can also help lower the chances of developing cavities. Cavities, or tooth decay, occur when bacteria feed on sugars and produce acids that erode tooth enamel. When teeth are crooked or crowded, it becomes difficult to reach certain areas during cleaning, leaving more room for bacteria to thrive. By straightening teeth with braces, you could brush your teeth more thoroughly, managing bacterial growth that can cause cavities.

Improves Facial Appearance

By correcting bite issues such as overbites, underbites, and crossbites, braces could help bring your jaw into proper alignment. This adjustment can potentially give you balanced facial features, creating a more symmetrical profile.

Reduces Chances of TMJ Disorder

By correcting bite issues such as overbites, underbites, and crossbites, braces could help bring your jaw into proper alignment. This adjustment can potentially give you balanced facial features, creating a more symmetrical profile.

Procedure for Your Dental Braces Treatment

1. Consultation

To better evaluate the condition of your dental malocclusion, the dentist will begin with taking diagnostic records of your teeth. This includes a detailed oral examination, taking photos, X-rays and 3D digital iTero scan. They will then assess this information and plan your orthodontic treatment accordingly.

Subsequently, the findings will be presented along with a tailored orthodontic care plan addressing your dental health goals and concerns. A 3D simulation of before/after results will also be provided.

2. Commencement of Braces

When you are ready to commit, the dentist will proceed with the braces placement, which is a quick and pain-free process. They will also discuss with you about the things to watch out for after having braces (eg diet restrictions, oral hygiene practices etc)

3. Follow-Up Appointments

Routine follow up appointments will also be scheduled in 4-6 weeks intervals, where the dentist will adjust the braces accordingly and monitor the progress.

4. Completion of Braces Treatment

Once the braces journey has ended, the dentist will remove your braces and you will proceed to the retention phase. This involves wearing your retainers according to your dentist’s instructions to maintain your new smile.

FAQs on Dental Braces Treatment

  • Braces are typically recommended for individuals after the age of 12, once most or all permanent teeth have emerged. However, the ideal timing can vary depending on the specific type of malocclusion (misalignment) a patient has. But braces aren't just for teenagers, adults can also benefit from this orthodontic treatment to address their misaligned teeth.

  • It generally takes 18-24 months depending on the case complexity. Your dentist will assess your dental condition and give you a better estimate of the treatment duration.

  • Follow-up appointments are typically scheduled every 4 to 6 weeks. It's crucial not to miss these visits, as they enable your dentist to monitor the progress of your braces and make necessary adjustments. Staying consistent with your appointments helps ensure that you stay on track with your orthodontic care plan and achieve your dental health goals within the estimated timeframe.

  • The recommended frequency is at least twice daily. Floss/water irrigator can be a useful tool in cleaning plaque around the braces.

Remember, maintaining good oral hygiene while wearing braces is important in ensuring optimal outcomes.

  • Lisping may be noticeable initially but patients tend to adapt very quickly and will speak normally again once that happens.

  • Yes, but it is recommended that you wear a mouthguard to protect your braces and teeth when playing contact sports.

  • Braces are sensitive to damage, so you will need to avoid sticky or hard foods, such as popcorn, nits, chewing gum, hard candy, and chips.

  • You may experience some initial tightness and discomfort after adjustments, as the braces begin shifting your teeth.

Additionally, if you are wearing metal braces, the brackets and wires could sometimes irritate the soft tissues, such as your gums or inner cheeks. To minimise this irritation, applying orthodontic wax over the brackets can help reduce friction and provide relief.
